Coatstand 01 components —

In designing objects I usually look for some kind of inner logic. A set of rules or relationships that may not be visible at first glance, but which are there as defining aspects of the object. With Set01 I explored a system of stick intersections that generate a locking mechanism. It is a way of working that stays close to the carpentry tradition. I worked similarly on all the three objects.

Coatstand01 has a connection that would be quite difficult to design and record without 3D modelling. It goes a little bit beyond this limit of what a brain can imagine and that is always very attractive to me. You can imagine how a partial intersection of two sticks is going to look like, but the intersection of three sticks in one place is difficult to visualise in the mind.

Testing in 3D has lead me to learn that the three sticks intersecting in one place can each actually be different and still create a complete symmetry when put together. This is my favorite part of the design process, to make these developmental surprising discoveries. The finished product modestly conceals the complex inner logic. — M Ch

1 — Coatstand01 is made of carefully selected ash wood. The shape stability of this wood suits long and straight components.
2 — The simplicity of the overall form is balanced out by the complexity of this detail. Only two sticks are CNC machined, the last one is plain. The three sticks lock together and form a strong symmetrical connection.
3 — I often link contrasting traditional and contemporary production techniques and materials in one object. Here its laser engraving in wood. The laser can keep the same depth even on a round object and the tone of the burning changes with the grain of the wood.
4 — Each stick has a hole for a polypropylene foot. The hole is angled so that the foot stands flat on the ground.
5 — The small 60mm pegs are specially produced for the coatstand from the same quality wood.
