Barstool 01 model —

Barstool 01 was designed using polygon mesh nurbs modelling that is most suited for organic shapes. To maintain the symmetry, smoothness of curves and precision of surface details the 1:1 model was produced using 3D printing from an .stl file. The material is a polyamide and glass powder mix and the printing technology is selective laser sintering. The structure is seamlessly built from several separately produced parts. The surface was beautifully finished in reflective fluorescent car paint. The model was produced during july 2009 by the czech and belgian divisions of Materialise.

HVH foundry uses this exact model to create a set of silicone and wax casts that eventually lead to the bronze casting of the final Barstool 01 series.

For the photo shoot the shining digital model is in a rather reactionary way thrown around outdoor. Even though it radiates a very man-made appeal its organic forms identify with the branches, twigs and leaves of the forest. — M Ch

5 — The indents in the legs of the barstool are fitted with spun teflon feet for the bronze cast version. Teflon has the third lowest value of surface friction of any known solid material. This helps protect floors and serves the mobility of the 14kg barstool. Here the bare legs are dirty from standing around on the foundry floor.
